This course aims to help those that work with people with a learning disability play a role in helping those they support live their life to the full and be included.

Course Aims:

The course will do this by working with delegates on the concepts and techniques which underpin and make possible effective communication with people with a learning disability.

The course follows a total communication approach and delegates are introduced to a range of communication techniques that can be used in addition to the spoken word and adapted according to the communication skills of the individual in question. This section of the course focuses on communicating with people who have mild to moderate learning disability as well as those who have severe a learning disability.

Delegates will have the opportunity to develop their communication skills, and learn about a range of communication concepts and techniques that can be used to facilitate effective communication with people with a learning disability.

Over the course of the day, delegates are invited to draw on their own experiences of communicating with people with a learning disability. Video film, activities and exercises allow participants to explore the various communication techniques and to discuss and reflect upon ways of incorporating them into their work.
