The Working Together with Parents Network is a partnership project aimed at improving support for parents with a learning disability in Wales, England and Scotland.

1 August 2016 to 31 July 2019.  Funded by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation.

The lead partner on the project is the Norah Fry Institute at Bristol University while the Scottish Commission for Learning Disabilities (SCLD) delivers the project in Scotland. In Wales, Learning Disability Wales runs network meetings in North and South Wales for parents and professionals to share experiences, ideas and good practice.

Parents with a learning disability and their children experience significant discrimination and disadvantage. While there is established positive practice in supporting these parents, provision is still poor.

The good practice that exists is threatened by the current financial climate, lack of consideration of parents’ needs in policy and by professionals’ lack of awareness of parents’ support needs.

Working Together with Parents is a UK-wide project that aims to bring about positive change for parents with a learning disability and their families over 3 years.

This project is working with key stakeholders from mainstream and family services across the UK to work towards a common vision and joint ways of working with parents with a learning disability.

In Wales the project has 4 strategic objectives:

  • Influence legislation, policies and practice development that affect parents with a learning disability.
  • Work at practitioner level with the legal sector and mainstream universal children and family services to promote awareness of how to work effectively with parents with a learning disability.
  • Build the evidence base for, and promote the dissemination of, effective policies and practices that support the rights of parents with a learning disability and of their children to a safe family life together.
  • To be the voice of professionals working with parents with a learning disability, coordinating a UK-wide network for sharing positive practice.

In Wales, our Parents with a Learning Disability Network brings together advocates, professionals and parents with a learning disability to share good practice and work towards getting the right support.

The network meets in North Wales and South Wales and is run in partnership with Vale People First and Conwy Connect for Learning Disabilities.

There are resources and useful links for both parents with a learning disability and the professionals who work with them in our Resources section.

The Working Together with Parents Network is funded by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation. We are grateful to the Baring Foundation for funding the network in earlier stages.
