Ready to Vote: Empowering people with a learning disability to take part in elections

Funded by Welsh Government’s Democratic Engagement Grant. This project aims to make politics and voting more accessible for people with a learning disability in Wales.

About the project

Ready to Vote is an exciting new project encouraging people with a learning disability to get involved in elections and have their say in politics.

We believe that everyone should have the right, and the confidence, to vote and understand what political parties stand for.

What we’re doing

Accessible workshops and training

A paid freelance trainer with a learning disability, supported by a co-trainer, is running workshops and training sessions for groups of people with a learning disability across Wales in the run up to both the Senedd election in May 2026 and the local elections in 2027.

These sessions:

  • Explain what political parties and manifestos are
  • Include fun, inclusive and interactive activities
  • Encourage confidence and understanding about voting
  • Feature our Welsh Youth Parliament representatives, who will share their personal experiences in politics.

Workshops also include mock election sessions to give everyone a chance to experience voting in a safe and supportive environment.

All sessions are accessible, fun and inclusive to ensure everyone can fully take part.

Workshop evaluations are captured through feedback from participants as well as film, audio, and photographs to celebrate everyone’s participation.

Creating accessible information about voting and elections

Our Easy Read Wales team is creating bilingual Easy Read information about politics, voting and elections. We are also sharing news and updates about the project via social media including videos and livestreams.

All resources, leaflets and updates will be made available online and at events to help everyone stay informed.

Hustings events

Our team are coproducing and facilitating hustings events for groups of people with a learning disability across Wales in the run up to the Senedd election in May 2026.

These events invite local political candidates to present their manifestos to people with a learning disability.

During these hustings, we will be sharing live “newsflashes” through our social media channels — keeping everyone up to date and engaged.

Keeping the momentum going

To build on the excitement, we are hosting awareness sessions in the run-up to the local elections in 2027, helping people to stay engaged and confident about voting.

Trips to Westminster and the Senedd

We are organising 4 trips for people with learning disabilities in Wales:

  • 2 visits to Westminster, London
  • 2 visits to the Senedd, Cardiff.

These trips involve a small number of people with a learning disability from across Wales and offer a unique opportunity to see democracy in action.

Project oversight and evaluation

The project will be monitored and evaluated throughout using a variety of methods, including:

  • Participation feedback
  • Social media engagement
  • Written reports.

This ensures the project continues to grow, learn and reflect the voices of the people we work with.
