We’re delighted to welcome Ellie Morgan to the Learning Disability Wales team. We asked Ellie to tell us about herself, and their role as Project Support Coordinator for Gig Buddies Cymru in north Wales.

Ellie has long hair and is wearing a grey sweater and sitting in a bar somewhere sunnyI joined the Gig Buddies Cymru team in November as Project Support Coordinator in north Wales. I work alongside our local coordinators Sian and John, development officer Kai, projects manager Karen, and enjoy supporting Victoria in her role as ambassador. I support the team through processing participant and volunteer applications, carrying out DBS checks, promoting the project, helping to organise events and socials and anything else that comes my way. Diolch yn fawr iawn to the National Lottery Community Fund for funding my role.

This is my first time working in this sector, and I am so excited to be a part of the Gig Buddies project. Growing up with a sibling who has a learning disability has meant that I’ve always been passionate about creating a more inclusive society for us all to thrive in. Everyone should have the opportunity to live a life full of fun, friendship and staying up late!

In my spare time I like to do yoga, bouldering and anything crafty that takes my fancy. I also love to travel – I’ve recently been to India and have lived in Australia for a year. I adore music and going to gigs, and my music taste is varied to the extreme! My main playlist on Spotify is just under 300 hours long and full of every genre imaginable – it goes on shuffle and I enjoy the surprise. Some (many) people disagree with my methods, but I like to be kept on my toes.

Despite being at the opposite end of the country to many of my colleagues, the team at Learning Disability Wales have made me feel so welcome and have been so incredibly helpful. Our gig buddy participants and volunteers have also done an excellent job in making me feel like part of the gang.

I’m excited to tackle the logistical challenge of helping to run a befriending service for people with learning disabilities in such a large and rural area. No one should have to experience loneliness simply because of where they live…where there is a volunteer, there’s a way!

We are always looking for new volunteers across north Wales. Get in touch to find out more: gigbuddies@ldw.org.uk.
