Learning disability and sight loss training

This training, delivered over 2 short sessions, aims to support you in your role by helping you to recognise signs of sight loss and provide you with resources to develop your skills and signpost you to further support.

The training is part of RNIB’s Vision Friends – Learning Disabilities project.

The training will be delivered online via Microsoft Teams in 2 sessions lasting 2 hours each.

When you book on this course you will be booked onto both sessions: Tuesday 12 and Wednesday 13 March 2024.

Identifying sight loss

In this module, we will discuss how sight loss can be hidden for people with learning disabilities and some of the signs to look out for which may indicate potential sight loss.

Understanding sight loss

In this module we will discuss common causes of sight loss for people with learning disabilities, the impact this can have on daily life and some simple adaptations we can make to better support people with sight loss.

Accessing eye care services

In this module, we will discuss and provide examples of adaptations you can make to ensure eye examinations or other eye appointments are tailored and inclusive for people with learning disabilities. We will also discuss other areas of support and how to find and access them.

Creating an inclusive environment

In this module we will look at the environment, specifically lighting, colour and contrast, and discuss simple changes to make this more inclusive. We will also talk about areas that present a greater risk to people with sight loss and how these can be avoided.
